Alberto Bettiol launched a decisive attack at the summit of the final climb to secure a solo victory on stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia on Friday, marking his first stage win in five years. Portugal's Afonso Eulalio maintained the overall leader's pink jersey.
Bettiol's Solo Triumph
Bettiol, riding for XDS Astana, caught Andreas Leknessund as they reached the Ungiasca summit and immediately dropped the Norwegian on the descent. The Italian powered away, glancing over his shoulder before raising his arms in celebration well before the finish line. His girlfriend, a native of Verbania, embraced him after the stage.
Stage Results
Leknessund (Uno-X Mobility) finished 26 seconds behind in second place. Belgian Jasper Stuyven (Soudal Quick-Step) won a four-rider sprint to claim third.
General Classification
Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious) led the peloton, which crossed the line over 13 minutes after Bettiol, maintaining a 33-second advantage over Jonas Vingegaard at the top of the General Classification.
Looking Ahead
Saturday's stage 14 is expected to shake up the GC standings, featuring a challenging 133-kilometre mountain stage from Aosta to Pila.
