Jude Bellingham turned down the chance to join Manchester United six years ago, despite the club's determined efforts to secure his signature. In the summer of 2020, virtually every major European giant was vying for the Birmingham City wonderkid, and Manchester United were no exception. They invited Bellingham, then just 16, to tour their Carrington training ground in March 2020, accompanied by his parents.
The visit included a meeting with legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, and former chief executive Ed Woodward was heavily involved in orchestrating the event. However, Bellingham ultimately snubbed United, Chelsea, and other heavyweights, opting instead to join Borussia Dortmund. The decision has proven wise for the now-22-year-old England star, who spent three years in Germany before moving to Real Madrid in a deal potentially worth £113 million.
According to reports at the time, Bellingham was impressed by what he saw at Carrington, even though the training facilities have since undergone significant upgrades under Sir Jim Ratcliffe's leadership. But the key reason for his rejection was his parents' belief that his development would be better served in the Bundesliga. Dortmund highlighted Jadon Sancho's rapid rise as proof of how young players can flourish in Germany.
The Bellingham family's conviction was further demonstrated when Jude's younger brother, Jobe, also joined Dortmund. Jude was given immediate opportunities to shine, which he might not have received at Old Trafford. Former Birmingham City CEO Xuandong Ren revealed that Bellingham declined a substantially higher wage when rejecting United and others. "Jude did not make any decision based on money," Ren said in 2022. "They were offering much more salary compared to the rest. Maybe double. He was going to be guaranteed millions in the bank and he didn't take it."
This story underscores Bellingham's dedication to charting his own future, suggesting United were fighting a losing battle for him at that stage. Bellingham and Sancho were teammates at Dortmund for one season before Sancho moved to Old Trafford, but by the time Bellingham was available again in 2023, Sancho was out of favor at United. That decline may have influenced Bellingham's decision, though the allure of Real Madrid's Bernabeu was likely decisive.
Now at Real Madrid until 2029, Bellingham hasn't sparkled as much this season due to injuries, but he will seek redemption with England at the 2026 World Cup.
