Four years to the day after England's first Test under Brendon McCullum began at Lord's, the team is preparing for a rematch against New Zealand with a promise to 'evolve slightly'. The 2022 series saw England chase down testing targets in all three matches, epitomised by Jonny Bairstow's 394 runs at a strike rate of 120.12.
McCullum acknowledged the memorable nature of that series, but stressed the need for evolution. 'Now what's required is for us to evolve slightly – still recognise the identity we want to play with, but to evolve slightly,' he said. He noted that New Zealand are a stronger side than in 2022 and that England must find ways to compete and disrupt.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who led the side in 2022, said England's approach then was a 'stark difference' and that they are constantly assessing how to improve. 'You're wanting to keep evolving as a side and getting the best out of what you have,' he added.
McCullum emphasised building a long-term, sustainable identity that outlasts his tenure. He cited young talent from the Lions as the future of English cricket, saying the goal is to embed an identity that allows them to flourish and win big series.
