Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness was taken to hospital after suffering a burst vein at a charity golf event on Saturday. The 73-year-old is reported to be doing well and has already been discharged, according to German media.
Hoeness has been a prominent figure at Bayern for nearly five decades, first as a player with more than 250 appearances, then serving as general manager for 30 years before becoming president. He stepped down from that role in 2019 but remains honorary president and continues to represent the club.
The incident occurred at the "Green of 18" charity tournament at Miel Castle near Bonn, hosted by Telekom CEO Timotheus Hottges. Telekom, a key sponsor of Bayern Munich, is reported to be close to extending its contract with the Bundesliga champions for more than £50 million per year. Bayern's current president, Herbert Hainer, was also in attendance.
Hoeness recently played a notable role in Bayern's efforts to sign Florian Wirtz, who ultimately moved to Liverpool. Wirtz's father, Hans, revealed that Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge made extraordinary efforts, and expressed gratitude for Hoeness's help following Florian's cruciate ligament injury in 2022. Hans noted that the final phone call with Hoeness was difficult, as Hoeness, though disappointed, remained objective and fair.
