Bayern Munich Demolish St Pauli to Set Historic Bundesliga Scoring Mark
Bayern Munich delivered a commanding performance, thrashing hosts St Pauli 5-0 in the Bundesliga to establish a new all-time season scoring record. This emphatic victory extends their lead at the summit to 12 points with just five matches remaining, putting the Bavarian giants on the brink of clinching the league title.
The club, who are preparing to host Real Madrid in a crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg after a 2-1 away win, now sit comfortably on 76 points. Their closest rivals, Borussia Dortmund, suffered a setback with a 1-0 home defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, leaving them stranded on 64 points.
Record-Breaking Goals and Dominant Display
Jamal Musiala opened the scoring with a header in the ninth minute, equalling Bayern's previous record of 101 goals in a single season set during the 1971-72 campaign. The visitors did not stop there, adding two quick goals to surpass the historic mark. Leon Goretzka found the net in the 53rd minute, followed by Michael Olise just a minute later, ensuring the three points were secure.
Nicolas Jackson added a fourth goal in the 65th minute, and Raphaël Guerreiro completed the rout with a fifth. Manager Vincent Kompany opted to rest several key players, including star striker Harry Kane, as Bayern continue to compete on multiple fronts. They remain in contention for three trophies, with a German Cup semi-final against Bayer Leverkusen scheduled for 22 April.
Barcelona Take Giant Stride Towards La Liga Glory
In Spain, Barcelona moved significantly closer to securing the La Liga title with a convincing 4-1 victory over city rivals Espanyol. This result puts them nine points clear of second-placed Real Madrid, who dropped points after a 1-1 draw with Girona on Friday.
Ferran Torres was the standout performer, scoring twice in the first half with assists from Lamine Yamal. He opened the scoring with a header from a corner in the 10th minute and doubled the lead in the 25th after a swift break. Espanyol managed to pull one back through Pol Lozano in the 56th minute, but Lamine Yamal restored Barcelona's two-goal advantage in the 87th minute. Marcus Rashford added a fourth from Frenkie de Jong's cross, sealing a dominant display.
"It's not over until we've won the league, but it's only up to us and that's a great feeling," Torres commented to Dazn. "It was a tough, hard-fought match, the scoreline doesn't tell the whole story. It was close, some little mistakes almost cost us dearly. But we're proud of our performance."
