Arsenal's hopes of advancing further in the Champions League have been dealt a blow after they were drawn against Bayern Munich in the last 16. Despite topping their group for the first time since 2012, finishing above Paris Saint-Germain in Group A, the north London club now face a daunting tie against the Bundesliga champions and five-time European Cup winners.
This will be the fourth meeting between the sides in the last five seasons in this competition. Arsenal were eliminated by Bayern at the same stage in 2012-13 and 2013-14, and the two clubs met in the group stages in 2015-16, each winning one match. The Gunners have not progressed beyond the last 16 since the 2009-10 campaign, when they beat Porto before losing to Barcelona in the quarter-finals. Since then, they have lost six successive ties at this stage, twice to Bayern, twice to Barcelona, and also to Milan in 2012 and Monaco in 2015.
Manchester City, meanwhile, have been paired with Monaco after finishing second in their group behind Barcelona. Manager Pep Guardiola, who spent three seasons at Bayern without winning the Champions League, will face a Monaco side that defeated Tottenham twice in the group stage and sit second in Ligue 1. Leicester City, competing in the Champions League for the first time, will meet Sevilla, the Europa League holders now managed by Jorge Sampaoli.
Other notable draws include holders Real Madrid against Napoli, Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica against Borussia Dortmund, and Bayer Leverkusen against Atlético Madrid. The first legs will be played on 14/15 and 21/22 February, with the second legs on 7/8 and 14/15 March.
