Arsenal will pay tribute to former youth striker Billy Vigar before their Champions League match against Olympiacos on Wednesday night. The 21-year-old died last week after suffering a significant brain injury while playing for Chichester City.
Vigar collided with a concrete wall during a game against Wingate & Finchley, was placed in an induced coma and underwent an operation, but the injuries proved too severe. The FA have launched a review of perimeter walls in non-league football following his death.
Players wore black armbands in Sunday's 2-1 win at Newcastle, and a further tribute is planned at the Emirates Stadium. A picture of Vigar will be shown on the big screen with a PA announcement before kick-off.
Under-18s head coach Adam Birchall described Vigar as 'an exceptional young man' with 'a lot of talent'. Manager Mikel Arteta called the news 'shocking' and offered full support to the family. Chichester City and Wingate & Finchley postponed their weekend games, with the latter pledging to install wall padding.
