Arsenal wonderkid Max Dowman has signed his first professional contract with the club, following a breakthrough season that has seen the 15-year-old train and play with the first team. The teenager, who has not yet sat his GCSEs, has been tipped for stardom by senior teammates including Declan Rice, who called him 'the best 15-year-old in the country'.
Dowman has made several appearances for the Gunners this term, including a cameo off the bench at Liverpool and winning a penalty in a rout against Leeds. His rapid rise has been supported by three key mentors: captain Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Declan Rice. Odegaard, who himself made his Norway debut at 15 before signing for Real Madrid, has shared advice on handling the spotlight at a young age.
Rice has been particularly vocal in his praise, saying: 'I've never seen a 15-year-old so comfortable around the first team. I said to Max on the way back from pre-season tour, I couldn't get my head around that he was going back to school.' The England midfielder has taken Dowman under his wing, while Saka has also offered guidance.
Manager Mikel Arteta has overseen Dowman's integration into the senior squad, noting the unique challenges of balancing education and professional football. 'We need to change his times, his education, his allocation, his diet, sleep patterns, training load, and exposure,' Arteta explained. The club has implemented safeguarding measures, including separate changing facilities, to protect the young star.
Arteta compared Dowman's situation to that of Saka when he first broke through, and the coaching staff are working to shield the teenager from excessive pressure. With a professional deal now secured, Arsenal are plotting the next steps for a player widely regarded as one of the most promising talents in English football.
