Viktor Gyökeres has revealed that brutally honest team discussions after Arsenal’s draw at Wolves spurred them to a restorative 4-1 win at Tottenham on Sunday. The striker scored twice in the derby victory, which moved the Gunners five points clear of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League, albeit having played a game more.
Speaking after the match, Gyökeres said that most of the squad spoke openly in a meeting on Friday, following the disappointing 2-2 draw at Molineux where Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead. 'It's important sometimes just to say what you feel and to let it out in the group,' he explained. 'When you speak in the group openly like that I think you come closer together.'
The Swedish striker, who joined Arsenal last summer for £64m, produced arguably his best performance for the club at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. His first goal was a curling strike from the edge of the area, while his second came after latching onto a Martin Ødegaard pass, holding off Archie Gray and finishing past Guglielmo Vicario.
Gyökeres acknowledged the importance of the goals, saying: 'I love to score, no matter who we are playing, but, of course, in this kind of game it's always enjoyable to score.' He added that the win was a perfect response to the Wolves setback and that the team's honesty in the meeting was crucial for improvement.
The 27-year-old has now scored seven times since his goal against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg on 14 January, making him the Premier League's top scorer across all competitions in 2026. He is Arsenal's leading marksman with 15 goals, with his eight league strikes coming against Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Burnley, Everton and Sunderland prior to the Spurs double.
