Deter spiders in October with 2-ingredient DIY vinegar mix
Deter spiders in October with 2-ingredient DIY mix

Spiders become more visible during October as the weather shifts, with many people finding them in corners, near windows and in other undisturbed spots. While most UK spiders pose no threat, their unexpected presence can be disconcerting.

Pest control specialists at Rentokil have recommended a household staple as a short-term remedy to discourage spiders from the home. It can be prepared in minutes and applied to areas where spiders are most likely to enter and conceal themselves.

Homemade deterrent

Rentokil recommends combining eight parts white vinegar with two parts water, then decanting the solution into a spray bottle. They added that spiders absolutely "hate" the potent, acidic scent of vinegar, which helps to repel them.

Once prepared, spray the solution around nooks and crannies, windowsills and doorways where spiders may gain entry or take up residence. White vinegar can be purchased for as little as 30p per bottle and used to address a variety of household tasks.

Rentokil specialists added: "Trying to get rid of spiders with a DIY vinegar and water solution can be a temporary method to deter spiders from entering your home, or choosing a snug corner to settle in. However, many other precautions have to be taken as these spiders actually crawl in from the outside."

Other methods to deter spiders

For a long-term solution, specialists advise thoroughly inspecting your home for potential entry points. Check around window frames, doors, walls and pipework for any gaps or cracks that could offer easy access. Blocking these openings can make it considerably more difficult for spiders to gain entry.

Pay particular attention to areas where indoor and outdoor spaces meet, such as around doors and windows. A variety of other scents can also be used to repel spiders, with PEST UK recommending fragrances such as lemon, lime and oranges. Anything with a powerful citrus aroma can help to deter these eight-legged creatures.

Eucalyptus, tea tree and peppermint oil are also worth considering. Simply rub or spray these around windowsills and doors for the best results.
