Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been dealt a significant double injury blow, with news emerging of a setback for Kai Havertz and a lengthy layoff for key defender Gabriel.
Havertz's Recovery Hits a Snag
German international Kai Havertz has experienced a minor relapse in his recovery from a knee operation. The forward initially sustained the injury in the first week of the Premier League in August and underwent a small surgical procedure.
While it was hoped he would return after the November international break, his national team coach, Julian Nagelsmann, revealed the unexpected development. "Kai had a small relapse, but overall he is okay," Nagelsmann stated on Tuesday. He added that he believes Arsenal will have the player back "towards the end of the (calendar) year."
Defensive Rock Gabriel Sidelined
In a further devastating blow for the Gunners, central defender Gabriel picked up a thigh problem while playing for Brazil in a friendly against Senegal last week. The influential centre-back was seen leaving the pitch in discomfort accompanied by medical staff.
According to reports, the Brazilian could be out of action for up to two months. This is a major concern for Arteta, as Gabriel has been instrumental in Arsenal's formidable defensive record this season, with the team conceding just five goals in their opening eleven league games.
Arteta's Squad Crisis Before Derby Clash
These injuries come at a critical time for the Premier League leaders, who host arch-rivals Tottenham in the North London derby this weekend. Arsenal currently sits four points clear at the top of the table.
Arteta's selection headaches are compounded by doubts over several other players. Riccardo Calafiori is returning early from international duty with Italy as a precaution. Noni Madueke, Martin Odegaard, and Gabriel Martinelli are also facing fitness tests ahead of the crucial match.
The team now faces a daunting run of fixtures leading up to Christmas, including matches against Tottenham, Chelsea, and a Champions League encounter with Bayern Munich.
