The Premier League has released the full VAR audio from the controversial penalty decision during Newcastle United's clash with Arsenal at St James' Park. Referee Jarred Gillett initially awarded Arsenal a spot-kick after Viktor Gyokeres went down under a challenge from goalkeeper Nick Pope, but the decision was overturned following a review.
VAR Darren England recommended an on-field review, stating that Pope had touched the ball before any contact with Gyokeres. The audio captures England saying: 'Nick Pope gets a touch on the ball. He touches the ball first, then there's contact afterwards. Therefore, that's not a penalty kick.' Gillett eventually agreed, overturning his original decision.
The incident sparked fury from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and captain Bukayo Saka, who criticised the call post-match. However, the Gunners went on to win 2-1 thanks to a late Gabriel Magalhaes header.
PGMOL chief Howard Webb defended the decision on the Match Officials Mic'd Up show, saying: 'The referee hadn't recognised that touch... the VAR saw it and deemed it was a clear error. I agree with the VAR's intervention.'
