Mikel Arteta has likened Arsenal teenager Max Dowman to Lionel Messi after the 16-year-old signed a pre-agreement to turn professional when he turns 17 in December. Describing him as 'one of the best' prospects he has ever seen, Arteta noted that Dowman's breakthrough at such a young age is unprecedented in his experience.
Dowman became the youngest player ever to feature in the Champions League when he came off the bench against Slavia Prague earlier this season aged 15 years and 308 days. He has made five first-team appearances this season before being sidelined with an ankle injury.
Asked how Dowman compares to other academy talents, Arteta said: 'Certainly one of the best. What he's done with us at the age of 15 — me, personally, I haven't seen it before. Only with a guy that used to play in Barcelona, but maybe not even that.' He added that Dowman possesses a 'certain charisma' and 'personality' that prevents him from being overwhelmed.
Dowman will become a scholar in the summer before signing his first professional contract at the end of the year. If he scores for Arsenal before the season ends, he will replace Cesc Fabregas as the club's youngest-ever goalscorer.
Arteta also provided an injury update, noting that Dowman is close to returning but has a different schedule due to school lessons. 'He needs to go to schools,' Arteta said. 'He's on the pitch now, he's doing well, and hopefully we're going to be able to see him soon.'
