Arsenal Football Club has experienced another significant behind-the-scenes change with the departure of technical director James Ellis, who has left his crucial role after just seven months in the position. According to reports from BBC Sport, Ellis has vacated the technical director position despite having been promoted from his previous role as head of recruitment earlier in the year.
Ongoing Restructuring at Arsenal
The departure forms part of an ongoing internal reshuffle at the North London club that has seen several key personnel changes in recent months. In December, the appointment of Maurizio Micheli to a senior recruitment position appeared to signal further restructuring, while nine months earlier the club confirmed Andrea Berta's arrival as sporting director.
Recent Boardroom Exits
Ellis joins a growing list of executives who have recently vacated boardroom positions at Arsenal. Edu Gaspar, whom Berta succeeded as sporting director, left the club in November 2024 to become Nottingham Forest's Global Head of Football the following summer. However, his position at Forest now appears precarious following the club's significant slump in form since his arrival.
Former Arsenal chief executive Vinai Venkatesham has also departed, now finding himself at Tottenham Hotspur where he faces considerable pressure from supporters over his initial decision and continued backing of head coach Thomas Frank. Despite it becoming apparent from around December that things weren't working out, Venkatesham maintained his support for the under-fire coach.
North London Derby Preparations
The news comes as Arsenal prepare for the North London Derby against Tottenham Hotspur, who have recently confirmed Igor Tudor as their interim head coach. Tudor, who will be taking charge of his first match in the derby, faces significant challenges with an injury crisis affecting his squad.
The 47-year-old Croatian manager revealed: "We made training with 13 players. It is how it is. It is not fantastic beautiful but in this case it's an even bigger challenge to succeed and come out of this situation. 13 we will have for sure and it's quite enough to achieve what we want on Sunday."
Arteta's Arsenal Approach
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta faces Tottenham for the seventh time this season against a team with a new manager in charge. The Gunners approach the derby following two frustrating draws against Wolves and Brentford, with Arteta insisting there couldn't be a more fitting occasion to bounce back after dropping points.
Arteta said: "It's the one we have after and it's the one that we cannot wait to play. If we could play today, I think we'd all love to play today and to get that feeling that we have in our tummies and use it in the right way. And we have to show on Sunday."
The Arsenal manager also provided an encouraging injury update on two key midfielders, stating: "Well, we have to wait until tomorrow, but there is a big possibility that they [Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard] are available for the game." This news comes as Eberechi Eze, who netted a hat-trick in the corresponding fixture earlier this season, has slipped down the midfield hierarchy lately, with his starting position far from certain.
