Arsenal are hopeful that developments next week could accelerate their long-running search for a new striker. Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres is expected to report for pre-season training, but the Sweden international is reportedly considering a strike to force through a move to north London.
Gyokeres and his agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, are at odds with Sporting president Frederico Varandas, who they claim has reneged on a gentleman's agreement that would have allowed the 27-year-old to leave for £60 million. Varandas insists Sporting will not sell below market value, and the stand-off is now reaching a critical point.
The striker was initially due back for training on Monday but was granted a four-day extension until Friday, ahead of Sporting's pre-season camp in the Algarve. If Gyokeres fails to report, Arsenal believe Sporting may be forced to lower their asking price, strengthening the Gunners' hand in negotiations for either Gyokeres or RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has been pushing for Gyokeres since joining the club, while manager Mikel Arteta has long admired Sesko. Arsenal sources deny any formal offers have been made, but Berta has held talks with representatives of both clubs. A reduced fee for Gyokeres could also be used as leverage in talks for Sesko.
In addition to the striker search, Arsenal are also looking to bolster their wide and attacking midfield options. Personal terms have been agreed with Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, and Arsenal are expected to approach the Blues to discuss a transfer. Other targets include Eberechi Eze and Rodrygo.
