Liverpool have completed the signing of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal in a deal worth up to £40 million. The England midfielder, who had one year remaining on his contract, turned down a new deal at Arsenal and a move to Chelsea to join Liverpool on transfer deadline day.
Oxlade-Chamberlain has signed a five-year contract worth £120,000 per week, significantly less than he would have earned at Arsenal. He said he chose to work with manager Jürgen Klopp because it favoured his development. Klopp described the move as 'not an easy decision' for the player but expressed delight at securing his services.
The 24-year-old follows Mohamed Salah, Dominic Solanke and Andy Robertson as Liverpool's summer signings. However, the club failed to secure deals for Monaco's Thomas Lemar and Southampton's Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool also confirmed that Philippe Coutinho will not be sold to Barcelona.
On deadline day, Liverpool loaned Divock Origi to Wolfsburg for a £6m fee, while Mamadou Sakho was close to a permanent move to Crystal Palace for £26m. Other loan departures included Allan Rodrigues de Souza to Apollon Limassol, Tony Gomes to Forest Green Rovers, and Ryan Kent to Freiburg.
