Arsenal Legend Claims Haaland's Winner Should Have Been Disallowed
Former Arsenal defender Lauren has insisted that Erling Haaland's winning goal in Manchester City's 2-1 victory over the Gunners should have been disallowed due to a foul in the build-up. The ex-Cameroon international argued that Haaland pulled Gabriel's shirt before scoring, a move he believes the referee missed, which ultimately changed the outcome of the match.
Controversial Goal Mars Arsenal's Title Hopes
Arsenal's Premier League title ambitions suffered a significant blow with this defeat, marking their second consecutive loss after a 2-1 setback against Bournemouth the previous week. With just five matches remaining in the season, Manchester City now have the opportunity to climb to the top of the table if they secure a win against Burnley on Wednesday. The match at the Etihad Stadium was fiercely contested, with Haaland and Gabriel both receiving yellow cards after a physical altercation during the game.
Lauren, speaking to CasinoWizard, elaborated on his view of the incident. "For me, Haaland was the one doing the fouling," he stated. "You have to try to be strong and not lose your balance, but I think it was nothing. Even in the goal that Haaland scored, he pulled his shirt. It should have been a foul and a disallowed goal." He urged officials and fans to review the action carefully, asserting that this oversight by the referee had a profound impact on the game's result.
Lauren Defends Arsenal's Transfer Strategy
In addition to commenting on the match, Lauren also addressed transfer speculation involving Arsenal and Manchester City's January signing, Antoine Semenyo. Despite Semenyo's impressive form since joining City, with eight goals in 19 appearances, Lauren defended Arsenal's decision not to pursue the Ghana international. He highlighted the presence of young talent Max Dowman in Arsenal's squad as a key reason.
"Why try to sign Semenyo when we have Dowman?" Lauren questioned. "There is nothing Semenyo can do that Dowman can't do the same. Give him some games, give him some confidence, and then let him talk. Let him express himself. He has the quality, the intelligence, he can shoot, he can nick passes between the lines." He emphasized that Dowman possesses all the necessary attributes and deserves more playing time to develop, even suggesting he should be considered for the England squad this summer.
Lauren acknowledged that Dowman still has much to learn, particularly from consistent 90-minute appearances and experiences in the changing room. However, he firmly believes that regular game time is essential for the player's growth and that Arsenal made the right choice in not entering the transfer race for Semenyo.
The former full-back's comments come amid a challenging period for Arsenal, as they navigate the final stages of the Premier League season while reflecting on key decisions both on and off the pitch.
