Arsenal are poised to capitalise on a significant advantage in the race to sign Bayern Munich stalwart Leon Goretzka when his contract expires this summer, despite failing to secure his services during the January transfer window.

The Gunners reportedly made formal enquiries in the winter window about acquiring the experienced central midfielder, only to be rebuffed as Goretzka opted to remain with the German giants until the end of the season. However, with his deal set to lapse in June, Arsenal are expected to renew their efforts with heightened determination.

Arsenal's interest was initially spurred by the unfortunate injury to Mikel Merino, who suffered a broken foot, creating an urgent need for midfield depth. Alongside Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali, Goretzka emerged as a prime target for manager Mikel Arteta, though the club ultimately concluded the January period without any new additions to their squad.
The 31-year-old Germany international attracted considerable attention during the winter, with offers from both Arsenal and Spanish side Atletico Madrid. Goretzka, however, decided to honour his commitment to Bayern Munich, where the team remains in contention for a historic treble, competing fiercely for the Bundesliga title, the Champions League, and the DFB Pokal.

Come summer, Goretzka will not be short of suitors. According to reports from German publication Bild, elite clubs including AC Milan, Juventus, and Napoli are set to join Arsenal and Atletico Madrid in the bidding war for his signature.
Nevertheless, Arsenal could hold a decisive upper hand in these negotiations. Sources indicate that Goretzka is particularly enthusiastic about the prospect of playing in the Premier League, believing that the English top flight's pace and physicality would ideally complement his dynamic playing style.
Bayern Munich Legacy
Since his arrival from Schalke in 2018, Leon Goretzka has been an integral figure at Bayern Munich, amassing an impressive 292 appearances. During his eight-year tenure, he has contributed 47 goals and 48 assists, playing a pivotal role in securing six Bundesliga championships, one Champions League trophy, and two DFB Pokal victories.
Bayern's sporting director, Christoph Freund, acknowledged the widespread interest in Goretzka last month, stating, "Leon feels very much at home in this club and this team. Despite several quality inquiries, he has decided to stay here until the end of the season."
Freund added, "After open and constructive talks, we have come to the conclusion together that he will seek out a new challenge in the summer. It'll be eight years at Bayern – eight extremely successful years with a strong person and player. Leon will give his all up to the summer to win as many more titles with the team as possible."
Arsenal's Midfield Landscape
Arsenal bolstered their midfield options last summer with the acquisitions of Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard. The squad already boasts considerable depth in the centre of the park, with players like Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, and Eberechi Eze providing quality alternatives, alongside the recovering Mikel Merino.
