Real Madrid Coach Demands UEFA Action in Racism Row
Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has publicly urged UEFA to "seize this opportunity" to demonstrate its commitment to combating racism in football. This call follows an alleged racial abuse incident involving Real forward Vinicius Junior during a Champions League match against Benfica.
Incident and Immediate Fallout
The controversy erupted after Vinicius claimed he was racially abused by Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni shortly after scoring the only goal in last week's Champions League knockout phase play-off first leg in Lisbon. In response, UEFA has handed Prestianni a one-game provisional ban, sidelining him for Wednesday's second leg in Madrid.
Argentinian international Prestianni has firmly denied the allegations. However, Arbeloa emphasized the broader significance of the situation during a press conference on Tuesday. "We are facing a great opportunity to make a significant step forward in the fight against racism," Arbeloa stated, according to Real Madrid's official website. He added, "UEFA has always been a strong advocate in the fight against racism, and now they have the opportunity not to leave it as just a slogan or a nice banner before matches."
Celebration Controversy and Club Reactions
The match itself was halted for approximately ten minutes after Vinicius alerted referee Francois Letexier to the incident, prompting his teammates to temporarily leave the pitch. Reports also emerged of racist gestures from some spectators in the stands at Estadio da Luz.
Vinicius received a yellow card for celebrating his 50th-minute goal in front of Benfica supporters. Benfica manager Jose Mourinho later criticized the Brazilian's actions as disrespectful and accused him of inciting the crowd. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois swiftly countered this narrative. "What disappoints me is using Vini's celebration. He didn't do anything wrong," Courtois said. "It's happened, and we need to move on. We cannot justify an alleged act of racism with a celebration."
Support for Vinicius and Ongoing Disciplinary Process
Arbeloa offered strong backing for Vinicius, describing him as a "fighter" with immense courage and character. "Anyone in his situation, I don't know how they would react. He has always done so bravely, showing tremendous personality," the coach remarked, expressing confidence that the player would excel in the return leg.
Meanwhile, Benfica president Rui Costa has vigorously defended Prestianni, insisting the young winger is "anything but racist" and announcing the club's appeal against the suspension. "Prestianni is being crucified as a racist person, and I can guarantee that he is anything but racist," Costa told reporters, according to Benfica's website. He added that the appeal was filed because "nothing has been proven" to justify the player's absence.
UEFA has indicated that further disciplinary measures against Prestianni may follow a complete investigation by an ethics and disciplinary inspector. Notably, Mourinho, who faced widespread criticism for his comments on the incident, will not hold his customary pre-match press conference ahead of the second leg.
