Frank Lampard admitted he was 'out of order' after sparking a post-match melee following Coventry's 1-1 draw at Southampton. The Coventry manager, targeted with abuse from home fans including chants of 'a shit Steven Gerrard', gestured towards the crowd at full-time, leading to a confrontation between players.
Lampard said: 'The fans had given me a bit in the last 10 minutes and I went on the pitch to give them a bit back. It was really out of order but I wouldn't have had as long in this game if I wasn't sometimes emotional on the pitch.' He added that he had 'no problem' with Southampton's players or fans.
On the pitch, Ephron Mason-Clark gave Coventry a first-half lead with a header from Victor Torp's pass. But Jay Dasilva's red card 85 seconds into the second half proved costly as Nathan Wood equalised for the hosts in the 56th minute, nodding in from Adam Armstrong's cross.
Elsewhere in the Championship, QPR thrashed Leicester 4-1, with Koki Saito, Richard Kone, Karamoko Dembélé and Amadou Mbengue all scoring in a dominant first half. Leicester manager Marti Cifuentes called the performance 'unacceptable'. Bristol City beat Middlesbrough 2-0 through goals from Emil Riis and Rob Atkinson, while Norwich drew 1-1 with Preston after conceding in stoppage time.
Ipswich climbed to third with a 3-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday, Hull moved fourth thanks to Oli McBurnie's penalty in a 1-0 victory over 10-man West Brom, and Blackburn beat Millwall 2-0 with Andri Gudjohnsen among the scorers.
