Andorra keeper 'suffering' after Tenerife player's death

Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono is said to be "suffering" following the death of Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel, with his team-mate Lautaro Spatz speaking out in his defence. The 30-year-old Tenerife player died on Tuesday morning after a collision with Owono during the closing stages of a Spanish second division match.

Police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, though this is standard practice under Spanish law. Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor Jose Luis Sanchez-Jauregui has told local media that criminal proceedings are "very unlikely."

Team-mate's tribute and defence

Andorra centre-back Lautaro Spatz has spoken about the tragedy, saying his team-mates are "completely shattered, speechless and filled with a sadness that is hard to explain." He also spoke out in defence of Owono, who reportedly broke down when De Miguel's death was confirmed.

Writing on Instagram, Spatz said: "I also want to say a few words about my team-mate, our goalkeeper and friend, who is deeply affected by what happened. Those of us who know him know the kind of person he is, how much he is suffering right now, and that he would never intend to hurt anyone."

He added: "In football, there are unforeseen incidents, but no one could ever imagine that one of them would lead to such tragic consequences. Today, football is the least of our concerns. All that remains is to stand by them in their grief, show the utmost respect and send all our strength to the family and to those who are suffering this terrible loss. Rest in peace, Demi."

Details of the incident

Spatz also wrote: "There are moments when football ceases to make sense. Moments that mark you for life and make you realise just how fragile life can be. What we have experienced is something none of us will ever forget. It is a tragedy that has left us completely shattered, speechless, and filled with a sadness that is hard to explain."

The collision occurred as Owono raced from his goal to challenge De Miguel for the ball in stoppage time. Having been in a serious but stable condition on Monday, De Miguel's condition worsened. The Canary Islands confirmed his passing in a statement on Tuesday.

Tributes have been paid across Europe, with a minute's silence observed before Tuesday's matches.
