Ruben Amorim has cast doubt over his future as Manchester United manager after a fiery press conference following Sunday's 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road. The Portuguese boss insisted he is the club's manager, not merely a coach, and warned that he could leave when his contract expires in 18 months or if the board decides to replace him.
Amorim's comments came after a match in which Matheus Cunha cancelled out Brenden Aaronson's opener for Leeds. The manager had hinted at frustration behind the scenes in the build-up to the game, but his post-match remarks were more explicit, telling the scouting department and sporting director 'to do their job'.
'I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach,' Amorim said. 'I know my name is not Tuchel, Conte or Mourinho, but I am the manager. It will be like this for 18 months or when the board decides to change. I will not quit. I will do my job until another guy comes to replace me.'
The 40-year-old has experienced more lows than highs since succeeding Erik ten Hag in November 2024, when he was appointed as head coach rather than manager. Reports this week suggested that figures behind the scenes, including head of recruitment Christopher Vivell, have questioned his tactical approach, and his dialogue with director of football Jason Wilcox has become strained.
'If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticisms, we need to change the club,' Amorim added. 'In every department – the scouting department, the sporting director – needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on.'
