Amateur Jockey Sam Lee Dies at 27, Leaving Horse Racing Community in Mourning

The horse racing world is in a state of profound shock and grief following the sudden death of amateur jockey Sam Lee at the age of 27. The tragic news was confirmed by multiple racing authorities, including the Injured Jockeys Fund, the Point-To-Point Authority, and the British Horseracing Authority.

Tributes from Racing Authorities

The Injured Jockeys Fund and the Point-To-Point Authority released a joint statement expressing their devastation. They described Lee as a "huge popular figure on the point-to-point scene" and extended their deepest sympathies to his family and many friends. The statement also announced that this weekend's point-to-point race meetings will observe a minute's silence in his memory before racing commences.

BHA chief executive Brant Dunshea added his voice to the tributes, stating, "We are all shocked and upset to hear about the death of amateur jockey Sam Lee. Amateur jockeys are an integral part of our sport, its community and its rich history. Every jockey, professional or amateur, will be mourning today the death of a colleague and friend, as will everyone across British racing." Dunshea emphasized that support services are available for anyone in the sport affected by this loss.

Lee's Racing Career and Biggest Victory

Sam Lee, who had four winners under Rules, achieved his most significant success in November 2019. He rode the Phil Middleton-trained Golan Fortune to victory in a Listed handicap hurdle at the prestigious Cheltenham racecourse, a highlight that cemented his place in the sport.

His talent extended to point-to-point contests, where he rode for trainers such as Francesca Poste and Claire Hart. In a notable achievement, Lee helped trainer Claire Hart return to the winners' enclosure for the first time in 1,611 days when Samtara scored at Mollington in May 2025.

Personal Tributes from the Racing Community

Trainer Francesca Poste and her husband Charlie, a former National Hunt jockey, paid a heartfelt tribute through their business, Station Yard Racing. They described Lee as a "larger than life character" who had become a huge part of their team over the last six months.

Their statement read: "You made the dull mornings seem bright. Always full of energy, immaculately turned out, and impeccably well mannered. You loved the horses, you were kind and generous, and most of all you wanted our team to do well. It certainly is going to be a very sad place without you."

The entire horse racing community, from professional jockeys to trainers and fans, is united in mourning the loss of a young talent whose passion and personality left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
