Trent Alexander-Arnold Reveals Tactical Adjustments Before Liverpool Exit
Alexander-Arnold's Tactical Changes Before Liverpool Departure

Trent Alexander-Arnold Opens Up About Tactical Shifts at Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold has candidly discussed the significant adjustments he made to his playing style during his final season at Liverpool, just months before his high-profile transfer to Real Madrid. The academy graduate, who spent only one campaign under manager Arne Slot, revealed that he had to adapt his game to meet the tactical demands of the Dutch coach, marking a departure from his previous role under Jurgen Klopp.

Adapting to Slot's Defensive Emphasis

Alexander-Arnold explained that Slot's system required him to focus more on defensive contributions, which led to a reduced creative impact on the team. Speaking to Liverpool's official website, the right-back detailed the flexibility needed in his positioning. He said, "In certain games, I'll be inside because of the way they [the opposition] press. Sometimes they press differently. It all varies on how they press."

Despite taking on a less prominent attacking role, Alexander-Arnold acknowledged that Slot's tactical changes still allowed him to influence matches effectively. He elaborated, "The manager will dissect how they press so we can outnumber the way they press. If they press with three, we'll have four players around, so that we can play through them. If they press with a two, then there'll be three players. It's just about who those players are and where it works best."

Slot's Direct Feedback and On-Field Adjustments

Alexander-Arnold emphasized his willingness to follow Slot's instructions, stating, "So, wherever the manager tells me to be, I'll be there because he'll tell me that's most likely where you'll get the ball. And if that changes, then he'll tell me during the game, 'You're not getting the ball there, try there and maybe surprise him in there and see if that works.' Throughout the game, there's a lot of things going on but if I understand it then it'll work. So far it has."

Slot was equally forthright about his expectations, telling TNT Sports, "When we started to work together, I emphasised also a bit on his defensive work. He had to keep producing the numbers in assisting goals, but if we wanted to be a team that concedes less shots, he had to improve a bit in defending." It remains unclear whether these tactical tweaks influenced Alexander-Arnold's decision to seek a new challenge at Real Madrid.

Challenging Debut Season in Madrid

Since his move to Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold has endured a difficult first season, marked by managerial instability following Xabi Alonso's sacking and struggles to secure a consistent starting position. The 27-year-old was recently benched for arriving late to a training session ahead of the Madrid derby against Atletico, though he made a positive impact off the bench by assisting Vinicius Jr's winning goal in a 3-2 victory.

Adding to his woes, Alexander-Arnold appears set to miss the upcoming World Cup after failing to be included in England's 35-man squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. This setback compounds the challenges he has faced in adapting to life at a new club, highlighting the ongoing adjustments required in his career.
