Alex Bregman has agreed a five-year, $175m (£140m) contract with the Chicago Cubs, according to sources familiar with the deal. The agreement, which includes a no-trade clause, is pending a physical.
The 31-year-old third baseman spent last season with the Boston Red Sox after signing a three-year, $120m contract in February 2024. He exercised his opt-out clause after hitting .273 with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs in 114 games, his fewest since 2021 due to a quadriceps injury.
Bregman began his career with the Houston Astros, winning World Series titles in 2017 and 2022. His move to Boston caused a positional conflict with Rafael Devers, who was eventually traded to San Francisco. Bregman earned his third All-Star selection last season with an OPS of .822, his best since 2019.
The Cubs finished second in the NL Central with a 92-70 record and reached the playoffs for the first time since 2020. Rookie Matt Shaw, who played third base last season, could move into a super-utility role following Bregman's arrival.
Chicago also acquired right-hander Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins earlier this week. ESPN first reported Bregman's agreement.
