Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier, overseeing the X-Men reboot expected no earlier than 2028, called it 'an incredible opportunity' but offered no specifics on how the transition will work.
A key issue is explaining why younger X-Men, who would have been born before 2008's Iron Man, missed major events like the Battle of New York, the Ultron incident, and Thanos's snap. Marvel could introduce alternate-universe versions, as planned for 2027's Avengers: Doomsday, featuring Fox-era actors like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. But this doesn't allow for the comic-book portrayal of mutants as a new wave reshaping the world.
One option is using the Blip from Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame as a reset button. The theory suggests that some resurrected individuals might return with mutant powers, such as laser eyes or angel wings. Alternatively, the multiverse could be leveraged: after 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars, Marvel might graft a universe where mutants always existed, similar to the 2015 comic event that merged Earth-616 with the Ultimate universe.
Another possibility involves Scarlet Witch's chaos magic, despite her apparent death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Death in the MCU is often temporary, so Wanda could be revived to activate a 'Mutant Expansion Pack'. Other ideas include Professor X secretly hiding mutants for decades, or the Celestials from Eternals being responsible for their emergence. Regardless, Marvel faces a complex task in seamlessly introducing the X-Men while maintaining continuity.
