Enzo Fernandez's Agent Slams Chelsea's Two-Match Ban as 'Completely Unfair'
Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has been handed a two-match suspension by the club following comments made during the international break that cast doubt on his future at Stamford Bridge. The 25-year-old Argentina international will miss Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale and next weekend's Premier League clash with Manchester City.
Rosenior Confirms Disciplinary Action
Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior confirmed the decision, stating he spoke with Fernandez about an hour before announcing the ban. "As a football club, with me as part of the decision, he won't be available for tomorrow's game or Manchester City next Sunday," Rosenior said. "It's disappointing for Enzo to speak that way. I have got no bad words to say about him, but a line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build."
The controversy stems from Fernandez's appearance on a podcast where he expressed a desire to live in Madrid, fuelling speculation about a potential move to Real Madrid. While he did not explicitly mention wanting to leave Chelsea or criticise the club, his comments were deemed inappropriate by the management.
Agent's Fierce Criticism
However, the issue has escalated with Fernandez's agent, Javier Pastore, launching a strong defence of his client. In an interview with The Athletic, Pastore branded the punishment "completely unfair" and questioned its timing and severity.
"Banning the player for two matches, which moreover are also absolutely crucial for Chelsea because qualification for the Champions League is at stake and he is one of the team's most important players," Pastore argued. "Alongside others, of course, but he has proven himself this year to be a leader and a key player, the backbone of this Chelsea side."
Pastore emphasised that Fernandez did not understand the rationale behind the sanction, noting that the player accepted it professionally but remained confused. "We don't understand the punishment because he doesn't mention any club or say he wants to leave Chelsea, far from it. He only mentions Madrid, the city," he explained.
Contrast with Cucurella's Case
In a contrasting development, Rosenior revealed that no disciplinary action would be taken against defender Marc Cucurella, despite the Spaniard's recent interview with The Athletic. Cucurella had suggested that the dismissal of former boss Enzo Maresca in January destabilised the team and appeared to question the club's recruitment policy focused on signing young players.
Rosenior addressed this separately, stating he had a "fantastic conversation" with Cucurella. "My disappointment in Marc's interview was where it went to. I think he should've spoken to us first about how he was feeling," Rosenior said. "I want players to know they can speak openly and honestly for the benefit of the football club. As a football club, we know we need to improve."
The situation highlights ongoing tensions at Chelsea as the club navigates a challenging season, with key players facing scrutiny over their public statements and the management enforcing disciplinary measures to uphold team culture.
