A teenage Chinese basketball sensation has taken the sporting world by storm after making a spectacular professional debut against players with WNBA experience.
Debut Dominance Against WNBA Talent
On January 4th, 18-year-old Zhang Ziyu came off the bench for Shandong Shijiuang in the Women's Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA). Despite playing only twelve minutes, the 7ft 3in centre produced a stunning 15 points and 12 rebounds against Hebei Win Power.
What made her performance particularly remarkable was the calibre of her opponents. The Hebei team featured several former WNBA stars, including Emily Potter and Kaela Davis. Clips of Zhang effortlessly scoring and rebounding over these experienced professionals quickly went viral on social media.
Proving It Was No Fluke
In the weeks following her debut, Zhang has continued to prove her talent is no accident. She has faced off against other high-profile opponents with WNBA pedigrees.
She matched up against Kamila Cardoso, the No.3 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, and recorded 10 points. In another game, she went head-to-head with Kalani Brown, the No.7 pick in the 2019 Draft, adding 7 points. In both contests, she contributed multiple rebounds and blocks, showcasing a well-rounded game beyond her extraordinary height.
A Towering Prospect for Global Basketball
At 7ft 3in, Zhang is one inch taller than the tallest player in WNBA history, Margo Dydek. The Polish star enjoyed an 11-year WNBA career after being drafted at age 24, making Zhang's potential at just 18 incredibly enticing for scouts.
Zhang comes from a basketball family in Shandong province, with both parents having played professionally in China. Her growth has been extraordinary; reports from Chinese social media state she was 5ft 2in in the first grade before reaching 6ft 9in by the sixth grade.
Despite her natural advantage, Zhang emphasises that height alone is not the key to her game. In an interview with FIBA, she stated, "There are some things we can't control. I regard it as a gift to me... I have to learn a lot." This dedication was on full display in a recent tournament where she delivered a career-best 44 points, 14 rebounds, and 5 assists in a win over Japan.
With such a dominant start against elite competition, experts are already tipping Zhang for a successful future in the WNBA, with some predicting she could enter the league as early as 2027. Her viral debut has undoubtedly marked her as one of the most exciting young prospects in global basketball.
