FSA Survey Reveals Overwhelming Fan Opposition to VAR Technology
A comprehensive new survey conducted by the Football Supporters' Association has delivered a stark verdict on the Video Assistant Referee system, with a resounding 75% of football fans expressing opposition to its continued use in the sport. The extensive polling, which gathered responses from 7,981 supporters across the country, highlights deep-seated discontent with the technology that was introduced to the Premier League during the 2019-20 season.
Matchday Experience Significantly Diminished
Perhaps most damning is the finding that more than 90% of surveyed fans believe VAR has actively made the match-going experience worse since its implementation. This overwhelming majority reports that the spontaneous joy of celebrating goals has been lost, replaced by anxious waiting for video reviews that often create confusion rather than clarity within stadiums.
The Football Supporters' Association, recognized as the largest supporter group in the United Kingdom, discovered that over 85% of respondents feel VAR makes football less enjoyable overall. Furthermore, just over 75% indicated that the reasons for VAR interventions remain unclear to spectators attending matches in person, creating a disconnect between what happens on the pitch and what fans understand in real time.
Persistent Concerns Despite System Adjustments
Thomas Concannon, the FSA's Premier League network manager, emphasized that these findings echo concerns expressed in the organization's previous 2021 survey. "The vast majority are reporting the same concerns five years on – the loss of spontaneity when celebrating goals, and an overall worsening of the matchgoing experience," Concannon stated. "We have shared the survey results with the Premier League and PGMO, and look forward to discussing its findings with them."
Significantly, the survey reveals that fans perceive the various adjustments made to the VAR system over recent seasons as failing to deliver substantial improvements. This persistent dissatisfaction suggests fundamental issues with how video technology integrates with the live football experience.
Specific Areas of Fan Discontent
The survey delved into specific aspects of VAR implementation that draw particular criticism from supporters:
- Over 50% of fans advocate for eliminating VAR reviews for offside decisions that lead to goals
- More than 60% prefer ending reviews for fouls or handballs in the build-up to goals
- A marginal majority of supporters (47% to 43%) would favor implementing some form of challenge system if changes were to be made to VAR
Football Authorities Remain Committed to VAR
Despite this widespread fan frustration, senior sources within major football organizations maintain that VAR is here to stay. These officials acknowledge the system's imperfections but believe the benefits – particularly improved decision-making accuracy – outweigh the negatives. They indicate gradual plans to address prevailing issues while maintaining the technological framework.
The Football Supporters' Association plans to formally discuss these survey findings with both the Premier League and the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMO) in upcoming meetings. The organization hopes these discussions might lead to meaningful reforms that address supporter concerns while preserving the integrity benefits that video technology can provide.
