The National Lottery has announced a historic transformation, introducing the first new game in its history and implementing the most significant changes to its main draw since its inception in 1994. Operator Allwyn has secured a landmark agreement with the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) in the United States to bring the globally renowned Powerball game to British players.
Powerball Comes to the UK
This summer, the UK will launch its own version of Powerball, the world's largest jackpot game. UK participants will pay £4 per line to compete for a shared jackpot exceeding £1 billion with their American counterparts. Winners in Britain will receive their prize over a 30-year period. While the exact launch date remains pending final regulatory approval, this marks a monumental expansion of the lottery's offerings.
Revolutionising the Main Lotto Draw
Simultaneously, the National Lottery is overhauling its flagship Lotto game. Starting June 7, players will receive two chances to win for every £2 ticket purchased, a first in the lottery's history. This change is projected to more than double the annual number of Lotto millionaires, increasing from approximately 140 to around 345.
The inaugural two-round draw will occur on Wednesday, June 10, with regular draws continuing every Saturday and Wednesday at approximately 8pm. This enhancement follows Allwyn's recent completion of a £450 million technological upgrade, which involved migrating 18 million player records and over three billion historical transactions to new platforms.
Boosting Returns for Good Causes
The introduction of Powerball is expected to generate substantial additional funding for charitable initiatives. Over 30% of each Powerball ticket price will be allocated to good causes, contributing approximately £1 billion extra over the initial five-year period. This supports Allwyn's ambitious target of doubling weekly returns to good causes from £30 million to £60 million by 2034.
Currently, the National Lottery raises £33 million weekly for charitable organisations. Andria Vidler, Chief Executive of Allwyn, emphasised the company's commitment to innovation and community support. "We are delivering on our promise to bring more games, more entertainment and more innovation to The National Lottery," she stated.
Strategic Vision and Future Prospects
Vidler further explained that the comprehensive upgrades to digital and retail channels have positioned the lottery for an exciting summer of new game launches. "By offering a wide range of complementary games, we're ensuring there is something for everyone – returning the magic, building our player base and making sure The National Lottery remains part of the national conversation," she added.
These strategic moves represent a significant evolution in the UK's lottery landscape, combining international collaboration with domestic innovation to enhance player experience and maximise philanthropic impact.
