A 61-year-old woman has tragically died following a horrific gondola crash at a popular Swiss ski resort. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, March 18, at the Engelberg ski resort in the Swiss Alps, where the gondola detached from its cable and plunged down the mountain.
Details of the Fatal Accident
Police in the central Swiss canton of Nidwalden reported that the gondola detached from the cable at approximately 11:00 am local time. The cause remains under investigation, but eyewitnesses noted strong winds at the time of the crash. Video footage has surfaced showing the gondola tumbling down Mt Titlis and flipping several times before crashing.
Victim and Rescue Efforts
The victim, identified as a 61-year-old local woman, was the sole passenger in the Titlis Xpress cart when it detached. The gondola had just departed from the Trübsee station and was ascending the middle section of the mountain. Air rescue services, ambulances, and police officers swiftly responded to the scene for the rescue operation.
Eyewitness Accounts and Aftermath
Witnesses described a "jerk" before the cable failed, with one skier citing strong winds. Beren Akkaya, a 14-year-old schoolchild at a local ski camp, expressed shock and fear, stating, "I was really shocked. We were then afraid to go back down in the gondola." The cable car service was immediately suspended, and between 100 and 200 passengers were safely evacuated from approximately 40 gondolas.
Official Statements
Norbert Patt, director of the ski lifts, shared his condolences, saying, "Our thoughts are with the victim's loved ones." The resort managers expressed deep shock over the incident, as investigations continue to determine the exact cause of the detachment.
