Scotland's World Cup campaign has ended in disappointment, with the team failing to advance past the group stage for the 13th consecutive major tournament appearance. The 72-year wait to reach the knockout rounds continues after results elsewhere confirmed their elimination.
Group Stage Performance
Steve Clarke's side finished third in Group C with three points, securing a 1-0 victory over Haiti but suffering defeats to Morocco (3-0) and Brazil (3-0). Their goal difference of minus three proved crucial in the race for the best third-placed teams.
Scotland needed to be among the eight best third-placed nations to qualify for the last 32. However, Ghana's failure to beat Croatia by three clear goals—a narrow 2-1 win for Luka Modric's side—ended any mathematical hope. Supercomputer data had given Scotland a 0.07 percent chance of progressing going into the final group matches.
Manager Under Fire
Clarke faced heavy criticism after the campaign, particularly following a post-match interview where he stormed out after the 3-0 defeat to Brazil in Miami. The manager's future is now uncertain as the Tartan Army heads home.
Scotland ended a 28-year wait to qualify for the World Cup but have now failed to get past the group stage in all 13 appearances at both the World Cup and European Championships, dating back to their first World Cup in 1954.
Elimination Confirmed
Scotland are one of four third-placed teams to crash out, alongside Uruguay. The remaining three teams to miss out were determined by late Saturday results. A total of 12 teams finishing bottom of their groups also exit at the first hurdle.
According to Anthony Evans of the Daily Record, the Scots' fate was sealed after Ghana's 2-1 loss to Croatia, leaving Scotland short of the top eight third-placed spots.
