Jhon Jaider Zúñiga, 27, and Marines Ussa Sarria, 31, died when the paraglider they were flying lost control and crashed into a mountainside in the Farallones area of Piendamó, a rural municipality in Colombia's Cauca department, on Wednesday, 29 July.
According to witnesses, the pair suddenly lost stability during a manoeuvre and plunged to the ground. Local residents rushed to the scene and helped rescuers carry the victims to waiting vehicles, which rushed them to hospital.
Fatal injuries
On arrival, Zúñiga showed no vital signs. Sarria, who came from Piendamó, reached hospital at about 11.20am in a critical condition, suffering severe head injuries and several fractures. Despite doctors' efforts, she died minutes later.
Investigation underway
Authorities have launched a full technical inspection and gathered evidence. Possible causes under review include mechanical failure of the equipment, pilot error or sudden strong winds. It remains unclear whether the two were on a recreational flight or one was instructing the other.
The Farallones hillside is a popular spot for paragliding because of its favourable air currents and mountain landscape. Experts stress the sport remains safe only with certified gear, strict protocols and constant checks on weather conditions.
