A man has suffered suspected broken legs and possible spinal injuries after jumping from a waterfall in the Brecon Beacons, Wales. The incident occurred at Sgwd Gladys near Pontneddfechan, Powys, on August 13 just before 5.30pm.
Emergency services, including the Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS), responded to the scene. The injured man was placed in a vacuum mattress for full body immobilisation, then winched into a rescue helicopter and flown to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
A witness who was present at the time described the event as a 'sight and sound that will stay with me for some time' and expressed hope that the incident would deter others from taking similar risks. The Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team noted that this was their 100th callout of the year.
