Record June temperature from 1976 UK heatwave expected to be broken
1976 UK heatwave record June temperature expected to fall

The record June temperature set in Hampshire in 1976 is expected to be surpassed during the current UK heatwave. The highest June temperature on record of 35.6°C was set on 29 June 1957 in London, then equalled on 28 June 1976 in Southampton during that year's heatwave. For 15 consecutive days from 23 June to 7 July 1976, temperatures reached or exceeded 32.2°C somewhere in England every single day.

Current heat dome threatens 40°C

Now in 2026, a heat dome settling over western Europe could bring temperatures of up to 40°C by Wednesday, close to the UK's all-time high of 40.3°C measured in July 2022. The Met Office has issued warnings as the nation braces for extreme heat.
