Cristiano Ronaldo, at 41, has walked out on Portugal's national team camp after being left as an unused substitute in a match against Norway, throwing his international future into massive doubt. The forward, who has scored 997 career goals and won five Ballon d'Ors, eight league titles, and five Champions League crowns, has seen his reputation tarnished by a series of recent incidents.
From Old Trafford to Saudi Arabia
Ronaldo's troubles began after his return to Manchester United in 2021, where he scored 24 goals in his first season. However, he was charged by the FA in 2022 for smashing a fan's phone after a defeat at Everton. He then had a public falling-out with then-boss Erik ten Hag and gave a bombshell interview to Piers Morgan, saying he felt 'betrayed' and criticising the club's management, leading to his contract being terminated.
He subsequently moved to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr on a record-breaking deal, becoming one of the first high-profile players to move to the Gulf state. He helped the club win the Arab Club Champions Cup and the Pro League title, scoring 132 goals in 155 games. However, he went on strike earlier this year to protest at the club's lack of signings in the January transfer window, missing two games before ending his strike after a warning from Saudi bosses.
World Cup and International Struggles
Ronaldo endured a miserable World Cup, with fans questioning Roberto Martinez's decision to start him in every game as Portugal were eliminated in the Round of 16. He netted three times, with two goals coming against Uzbekistan, leading to calls for him to step back from international duty.
Under new boss Jorge Jesus, Ronaldo was included in the first squad and captained the side in a 1-0 win against Wales. But against Norway, he was an unused substitute and stormed down the tunnel without acknowledging the travelling fans. Jesus suggested he would hold talks with his captain, but Ronaldo left camp.
Statement and Uncertain Future
Ronaldo said: "After the press conference of the national team, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team camp." He added: "In time, I will tell all the Portuguese the truth about the reasons that motivated me to leave the national team, to which I always devoted myself. Now is the time to wish Portugal and all my teammates good luck, without exception."
He is also out of contract with Al-Nassr at the end of the season, leaving his future very much up in the air. This could mean a very unremarkable end to a remarkable career for a player who should be considered one of the best of all-time.
