Newcastle welcome back Ramsey as injury crisis eases

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has been boosted by the return of another injured star ahead of the trip to Coventry City. Jacob Ramsey was spotted joining his team-mates in preparation for the game, in new footage released by the club on the eve of the match.

Ramsey back in contention

Ramsey suffered a thigh injury in the warm-up ahead of the 4-1 loss to Leeds United and has not featured since. The former Aston Villa star has benefited from the three-week international break, like a number of injured players offered time to recover from knocks and niggles.

Jaissle had said last month: "Ramsey felt discomfort in his hamstring during the warm-up, so he couldn't play tonight. It's another challenge we're facing. That's how the night went, many things happened at once."

Fight for a starting place

Ramsey has a fight on his hand to get into Jaissle's starting line-up and has yet to start a Premier League game this season. He came off the bench against AFC Bournemouth to score a valuable equaliser in the 2-2 draw at St James' Park earlier in the campaign, but has been restricted to starts in Carabao Cup games.

The £43million signing from Aston Villa played 90 minutes against West Bromwich Albion in round three and made an 83-minute appearance against Millwall in the next round. It remains to be seen whether he is back tonight and where he will play when he returns.

Position preference

Ramsey opened up about his position earlier in the season, saying: "In training, I've been playing as the 10. I thought I trained really well this week. I came on a bit deeper but I think I'm comfortable on the ball deeper or in the 10. At Villa I played the left-10 position."

The Magpies head to the East Midlands hoping to continue their winning form three weeks on since the 2-1 win over Hull City. They will also welcome back Joelinton and Nico Gonzalez for the encounter with Frank Lampard's side, as the injury crisis eases for Jaissle.
