Manchester United's famous trophy haul could grow if honours rivals Manchester City captured ahead of them are awarded to the runners-up, following City being found guilty of 114 of 115 financial charges.
Michael Carrick's side do not play again until Saturday, October 10, when they host Tottenham at home. But in the meantime, City have been found guilty of all but one of 115 charges concerning financial rule violations between 2009 and 2018. City have consistently denied any wrongdoing and insist they will continue to fight the case to prove their innocence.
De Gea and Ferdinand react to ruling
United legend David de Gea has responded to the ruling by questioning what it means for his collection of Premier League crowns. The Spanish goalkeeper, 35, who now captains Fiorentina, claimed the title with United in 2013, but also ended as runner-up to City in 2012, 2018 and 2021.
While the punishments remain undecided, De Gea has commented about how City potentially losing their titles could boost his collection of major honours. Taking to X, De Gea posted: "So...... Let's talk. How many Premier League titles have I won then?"
The veteran shot stopper spent 12 years at United, clocking up 545 appearances and claiming the FA Cup, League Cup, Europa League and Premier League. Following a year away from the game, he moved to Serie A in 2024.
United seal Eze signing
Meanwhile, his former United team-mate Rio Ferdinand posted a photo of himself with seven Premier League medals. The defender, 47, wrote: "Another premier league medal to be added to the cabinet. And another for Jose," referencing Jose Mourinho, who managed Manchester United from 2016 to 2018.
United have also sealed the capture of talented young midfielder David Eze from City. The Manchester Evening News reported that the transfer was nearing completion in July. The 16-year-old has now penned a deal that also features a pre-professional contract, guaranteeing he will move onto professional terms when he reaches 17.
The teenage midfielder becomes the latest City player to swap allegiances to Old Trafford. He joins just days after fellow youngster and midfielder Karrim Cassim, 17, made the same move across Manchester.
A United club statement read: "Talented youngster David Eze has joined Manchester United. The central midfielder has joined the club after leaving Manchester City. The 16-year-old, who progressed through the academy system at City, has also been capped by England at youth level. Everyone wishes David the best of luck at United and welcomes him to the club."
