Sir Geoff Hurst Backs England to Win World Cup and Save Pubs
Hurst: England Win Could Save Struggling Pubs

England legend and 1966 World Cup final hero Sir Geoff Hurst is backing the Three Lions to deliver a hat-trick of good news this summer, a feat that could have an even greater impact than the three goals he scored against West Germany 60 years ago.

Not only is Sir Geoff predicting England to win the World Cup, but he reckons if they do, it could save struggling boozers and 'bring people together'.

Speaking to the Daily Star at the launch of Sky Bet's Believer Vault, the former West Ham striker said Thomas Tuchel's men could 'absolutely' take home the trophy, adding that the German boss has selected 'strong characters' to get them through when 'things don't go right'.

Sir Geoff's Confidence in the Team

He said: 'It would not shock me at all if we win it. Yes, we've got some fantastic players, but it's also a team that wins a World Cup, and Tuchel seems to be bringing out a sense of togetherness, and I love that.'

Impact on Pubs

Sir Geoff, who famously bought a boozer while playing for Stoke City, reckons that if England do win, pubs will be celebrating as much as the fans. He told the Star: 'It's a country thing, not just a football thing. Success brings people together. We know pubs are struggling, but they will benefit when people are feeling positive and coming together to celebrate.'

Broader National Impact

And it's not just boozers that a World Cup victory could potentially save, but the national psyche itself in the wake of the cost of living crisis and global conflicts, according to Sir Geoff. He said: 'It's something this country could really do with. We hear disappointing news almost every day. I switch the television off sometimes because it can be so negative. Winning a World Cup gives the whole country a lift and gives people a more positive mentality.'

A Personal Wish

While Sir Geoff hopes for an England hat-trick off the pitch, the Three Lions legend joked to the Star that he is not so keen about the idea of one in the final itself. Pointing out that he is still the only player to score three times in a World Cup final and then win the game, Hurst quipped: 'I hope Harry Kane scores two and England win the final.'
