Casemiro and Carlo Ancelotti faced fierce criticism from former Brazil internationals after the national team's underwhelming 1-1 draw with Morocco in their World Cup opener. The result left many questioning the team's performance and tactical decisions.
Ancelotti Under Fire
Carlo Ancelotti, one of the world's most decorated managers, saw his Brazil side struggle to impose themselves against a well-organized Moroccan team. Former Brazil midfielder Neto did not hold back in his assessment, telling ESPN: 'This Ancelotti is a joke. He picks the team badly.'
Casemiro's Performance Questioned
Casemiro, a key figure in midfield, was singled out for criticism. Neto added: 'How long have I been saying that Casemiro isn't fit to play football?' Lucas Leiva, another former Brazil midfielder, echoed similar sentiments, noting that Casemiro appeared 'always late in the challenge' and failed to control the midfield.
Team Selection Concerns
Neto also questioned the inclusion of Lucas Paqueta and Roger Ibanez, suggesting changes such as bringing in Danilo Santos, Luiz Henrique, Rayan, and Endrick. The 19-year-old Endrick remained an unused substitute, which baffled many fans. 'What did Endrick do to these people?' Neto asked.
Morocco's Dominance
Morocco took the lead through Ismael Saibari after 21 minutes, with Vinicius Junior equalizing just 11 minutes later. Despite Brazil's improvement after halftime, the African side largely controlled the first half. Neto criticized the team's defensive organization, saying 'that organization wasn't seen today.'
Further Criticism from Felipe Melo
Former Brazil midfielder Felipe Melo also criticized Ancelotti for starting Roger Ibanez at right-back, calling it a mistake. 'Ibañez shouldn't have started the game at all. He's a very good player, but he's not a full-back,' Melo told SporTV. He added that Vinicius Junior was Brazil's best player, but Morocco's team performance was superior.
The draw leaves Brazil with work to do in their remaining group matches as they seek to end their 24-year wait for a sixth World Cup title.
