Massive queues stretched down Heaton Road on Saturday as The Sinful Spine, Newcastle's first romance-only book shop, opened its doors for the first time. People waited up to two hours to get inside.
The launch had sparked widespread interest since plans for the Heaton Road store were announced earlier this year. The shop's Instagram account quickly gained a large following while owner Bella Welsh worked behind the scenes to prepare for opening day.
Opening Day Success
The turnout was one of the biggest seen at a Newcastle store opening in a long time, with the queue growing throughout the day and snaking down the street. Staff were in disbelief at the response.
The shop sold almost 95% of its stock on Saturday, prompting plans for a Sunday opening to be scrapped so owner Bella Welsh and her team could restock.
Taking to Instagram on Sunday, Bella said: "To say we're on cloud nine would be an understatement. We still can't believe how our opening weekend went and, honestly, we don't think we'll ever come down from this high."
She continued: "The love and support you have shown The Sinful Spine is more than we could ever have imagined. Every visit, every book bought, every cocktail, every coffee, every message, every share and every kind word has meant the world to us. We're completely overwhelmed, but in the very best way."
Reopening This Week
The Sinful Spine will be back this week after shelves are replenished. It is due to be open until Wednesday, and based on Saturday's scenes, queues are likely if you visit.
