Biathlete Passler Cleared for Olympics After Doping Appeal Win

Italian Biathlete Rebecca Passler Cleared to Compete in Milan Cortina Olympics

Italian biathlete Rebecca Passler has been cleared to compete in the upcoming Milan Cortina Winter Olympics after successfully appealing her provisional doping suspension. The National Court of Appeal of Nado Italia, the country's official anti-doping body, upheld her appeal against the suspension, which was initially imposed following a positive test for a banned substance last month.

Court Recognises Involuntary Intake of Substance

According to a press release from the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI), the court recognised "the apparent validity of the involuntary intake or unconscious contamination of the substance in question." Passler had consistently maintained that her positive test resulted from contamination and that she was not at fault for the presence of the substance.

The substance identified in the test was letrozole, a medication primarily used in breast cancer treatment that can also help control the effects of steroid use. This finding supported Passler's claims of unintentional exposure, leading to the favourable ruling from the appeals court.

Passler Expresses Relief and Gratitude

Passler, whose hometown of Anterselva will host biathlon events during the Olympics, expressed her delight at being able to rejoin her team. "They have been very difficult days," she stated in a release from FISI. "I have always believed in my good faith. I thank all those who helped me, from the lawyers who followed my situation, to the Italian Winter Sports Federation, to my family and friends. Now I can finally get back to focusing 100% on biathlon."

Her return to competition is scheduled for Monday, 16 February, though she will miss the women's sprint race on Saturday and the pursuit event on Sunday due to the timing of the decision.

Federation Welcomes the Decision

FISI President Flavio Roda welcomed the court's decision, stating: "The Federation welcomes the outcome of the appeal that allows Rebecca to return to the team’s disposal." This endorsement from the federation underscores their support for Passler throughout the appeals process.

Family Legacy and Career Achievements

Passler comes from a family with a strong Olympic tradition; her uncle, Johann Passler, is an Olympic medallist who secured two bronze medals in biathlon at the 1988 Calgary Winter Games. Rebecca Passler herself has demonstrated considerable talent on the world stage, building on a highly promising junior career.

Her achievements include two bronze medals in World Cup relay events, earned in 2022 and 2023 respectively. These successes highlight her potential as she prepares to compete in front of her home crowd at the Milan Cortina Olympics, adding to the anticipation surrounding her participation.

The overturning of her suspension not only clears her name but also allows her to focus entirely on her athletic performance, providing a significant boost to the Italian biathlon team as they gear up for the prestigious event.
