Following his departure, the remaining players held a lengthy meeting and voted by a significant majority to proceed with the fixture.
FAI appeal rejected by UEFA
Prior to the match, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) had submitted a request to UEFA asking to be kept separate from Israel in all future tournament draws. However, UEFA rejected this appeal, stating that their policy addresses such matters on a case-by-case basis and noting the two countries are not in direct conflict.
Bazunu's statement on social media
Releasing a statement on social media, Bazunu explained his decision by saying: "I am a man of strong faith and try my best to be a person of character and principle, therefore I feel it would be wrong to participate in the upcoming fixtures against Israel." He expanded on this ethical stance by noting: "My decision is based purely upon my personal belief that the killing of innocent people is wrong."
Clarifying his stance
The goalkeeper carefully clarified the specific nature of his protest so it would not be misinterpreted as prejudice against any group. He added: "It is important to note that my stance is not in opposition of the Israeli people or the Jewish community but against the atrocities in the region."
Bazunu concluded his message by expressing the importance of seizing rare moments to act on moral conviction. His final words on the matter were: "There are few times where you get a chance in life to stand up for something bigger and I strongly believe that this is one of them."
