Two freestyle mountain bikers were airlifted to hospital after crashing at the Red Bull Rampage event near Zion National Park in Utah. The incidents occurred on Sunday, with the first involving Spanish rider Adolf Silva.
Silva crashed while attempting a double backflip on his second run, landing hard on his head and rolling down a steep rock face. He was loaded onto a stretcher and airlifted to hospital. Red Bull USA reported that he was 'alert, conscious and talking to his loved ones' about half an hour after being transferred.
Later that day, Swedish rider Emil Johansson was also airlifted after crashing down a sheer cliff face while attempting a tailwhip. The competition was paused for medical crews to reach him. Johansson later posted on social media that he suffered a dislocated hip and may need surgery, but was otherwise unscathed.
Silva posted an update on Monday, confirming a lower back injury and thanking supporters. The event, known for its extreme terrain and difficult tricks, continued after a break following each crash.
