A New Zealand cyclist has been suspended for 25 days by the world cycling governing body after a video emerged showing him punching a rival during a competitive race last month.

Kiaan Watts, aged 24, was captured on camera striking Dutch cyclist Marijn Maas in the head during the Salverda Bouw Ster van Zwolle race in the Netherlands on 7 March. The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) confirmed that Watts accepted the sanction, which will see him suspended from all competition until 2 May.
In an official statement, the UCI detailed the penalty: "Kiaan Watts will serve a period of suspension of 25 days, with the one-day suspension imposed on the rider by his team on March 8 being credited from the period of suspension." This adjustment means the total ban effectively runs from the date of the incident.
Apology and Team Response
Following the altercation, Watts issued a public apology on social media, attributing his actions to the "heat of the moment". His NSN Development Team also released a statement expressing regret over the incident.
The team stated: "The team expects that its riders race in a sporting and professional manner at all times and wishes to extend an apology to Marijn Maas, the BEAT CC p/b Saxo team, race organisers, and the UCI Commissaires." This response underscores the team's commitment to upholding professional standards in cycling.
