Australian Cyclist Michael Matthews Breaks Both Wrists in Training Crash

Australian cyclist Michael Matthews has fractured both wrists in a training crash, ruling him out of racing for the foreseeable future. The 35-year-old Jayco AlUla rider sustained the injuries during a training ride on Thursday and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Team medical staff confirmed that CT scans revealed fractures to both wrists, forcing Matthews to withdraw from all upcoming races. The injury dashes his hopes for the European spring classics, including Milan-Sanremo, where he finished fourth last year.

Matthews began his 2025 season with a victory at the Gran Premio de Castellon in Spain in late January, marking the 44th win of his 17-year career. He had been set to compete in Paris-Nice starting Sunday.

The Canberra-born rider endured a challenging 2025 campaign, recovering from a life-threatening pulmonary embolism discovered at an altitude training camp in Livigno, Italy. Matthews has won stages of all three Grand Tours and the green jersey at the Tour de France.
