Wales enjoyed a golden night at the Commonwealth Games as Emma Finucane and Anna Morris both beat English rivals to claim track cycling titles at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
Finucane wins second gold
Finucane continued her outstanding Games by winning her second gold medal, defeating England's Sophie Capewell in the women's sprint final to cement her status as one of Wales' biggest stars of the competition.
The Carmarthenshire rider had already helped Wales strike gold in the women's team sprint before adding the individual sprint title to her collection, becoming the first Welsh woman to win two gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games.
The triple Olympic medallist looked in complete control throughout the knockout stages. She eased past reigning Olympic champion Ellesse Andrews of Australia in the quarter-finals before overcoming fellow Welsh rider Rhian Edmunds in the semi-finals. Edmunds recovered from that defeat to secure the bronze medal, ensuring two Welsh riders finished on the podium.
Capewell reached the final after a dramatic semi-final against Malaysia's Nurul Mohammed Asri. The Malaysian won the opening heat before being penalised in the second for delaying tactics, allowing the English rider to progress to the gold medal match. However, Finucane proved a class apart in the final, producing another dominant display to comfortably get the better of Capewell and retain Welsh supremacy.
Morris dominates pursuit
There was more success to come for Wales later in the session as Morris delivered a commanding performance in the women's individual pursuit. The reigning world and European champion opened an early advantage over Knight and continued to extend it throughout the race, eventually catching sight of her rival on the track before crossing the line to win gold in a Games-record time. Scotland's Erin Boothman claimed bronze.
"These Games have been the highlight of my career alongside the Olympics," said Finucane. "It's been amazing what we've achieved as such a small nation. We've had Anna winning today and pulled it through. I believe it's the passion and belief we have."
Breen adds long jump gold
Elsewhere, Team Wales captain Olivia Breen won gold by winning the T38 long jump final at the Scotstoun Stadium.
"It was a great competition and the Scottish crowd were amazing," she said. "I think I'm going to get very emotional on the podium. I just love competing for Wales, nothing ever beats it."
The victories completed a memorable evening for Team Wales, with Finucane and Morris combining to win two gold medals while both denying England in their respective finals. It also strengthened Wales' medal haul heading into the final weekend of the Games, with Finucane set to return to the track looking to add yet another medal to her growing collection.
