Former world champion cyclist Becky North has announced the death of her younger sister Bethan at the age of 31. North, who is married to Wales rugby legend George North, shared the news in an emotional Instagram post, paying tribute to her sister's strength throughout her life.
Bethan was born with fluid on the brain and lived with cerebral palsy, epilepsy and blindness. She required round-the-clock care and had overcome numerous serious health challenges over the years.
A Heartbreaking Tribute
In her post, Becky, who competed under her maiden name of James during her cycling career, wrote: "Our darling sister, Bethan. You fought so hard, and you defied the odds so many times. 31 beautiful years on this earth, leaving behind more love than words could ever explain. We are so proud of you and we will love you and miss you for the rest of our lives. Our hearts are broken, but we feel so lucky to have had you as our sister. Sleep peacefully, our beautiful angel. Until we meet again."
Becky has previously spoken about the profound influence Bethan had on her outlook on life. In an interview with The Independent in 2013, shortly after becoming a double world champion in track cycling, she explained how her sister's health struggles helped her maintain perspective despite the pressures of elite sport.
Bethan's Care and Family Support
Bethan had required constant care since birth, with Becky's parents David and Christine dedicating much of their lives to looking after her. In the same interview, Becky revealed how the family had endured a difficult period after Bethan spent 12 weeks in hospital the previous year.
"Bethan was born with fluid on the brain and needs 24-hour care. My parents have been the most amazing people in the world," she said. "When she's poorly, it's hard. It makes you appreciate everything you have so much more."
Becky also recalled the time she spent helping care for Bethan while growing up, including feeding and bathing her when her parents needed assistance.
A Distinguished Career
Becky, from Abergavenny, became one of Britain's leading track cyclists, winning two world titles in 2013 before securing two silver medals at the Rio Olympics in 2016. She later married former Wales and British and Irish Lions star North.
