George Russell reignited his Formula 1 championship hopes with a commanding victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, cutting Kimi Antonelli's lead in the drivers' standings. The Mercedes driver secured a controversial pole position and held off Max Verstappen and teammate Antonelli to claim his first win since the season opener in Australia.
Russell's triumph at the Red Bull Ring came 112 days after his victory in Melbourne, following a difficult period that saw him slip behind in the title race. A strong second-place finish in Barcelona two weeks ago restored his confidence, and he carried that momentum into Spielberg to deliver a flawless performance.
The win moves Russell ahead of fellow Briton Lewis Hamilton into second place in the drivers' championship, narrowing the gap to Antonelli. With the British Grand Prix at Silverstone next on the calendar, Russell will look to further reduce the deficit in front of his home crowd.
