The first men's Twenty20 international between Australia and India was abandoned due to rain after just 9.4 overs at Manuka Oval in Canberra. Australia captain Mitch Marsh won the toss and elected to field, but persistent showers prevented a result, leaving both teams frustrated.
India, batting first, reached 97 for 1 from 9.4 overs, with captain Suryakumar Yadav unbeaten on 39 off 24 balls and opener Shubman Gill scoring 37 not out off 20 balls. The pair added 54 runs after a rain delay, including a flurry of boundaries, before the heavens opened again, forcing abandonment.
Earlier, opener Abhishek Sharma made a brisk 19 off 14 balls before falling to Nathan Ellis. The match also saw the return of India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who is expected to play in the next match after missing the Test series last summer.
The two sides will meet again for the second T20I in Melbourne on Friday, hoping for better weather.
